Roles and permissions: what Owner, Admin, Editor, Logger and Viewer can do

On a profile the roles are Owner, Admin, Editor, Logger and Viewer; on a single trip they're Owner, Admin, Editor and Viewer. Viewers read, Loggers log, Editors change things, Admins share, the Owner can delete.

Every person in a profile, or on a trip shared on its own, has one role. The role decides what they can do; it's the same in the iPhone app and on the website. Owner, Admin, Editor, Logger and Viewer go from most to least.

The Owner is whoever created the profile. They don't appear as a share and can't be changed or removed.

A trip has no Logger role. The Owner is whoever created the trip.

Good to know

  • Your role on a trip comes from the trip share if it was shared with you directly; otherwise it's your role in the trip's profile. The profile's owner has full access to every trip in it, but sharing a trip on its own is for the trip's creator and its Admins.
  • Deleting an asset is for the person who created it, whatever their role. Anyone else with edit rights can take it out of a profile (Remove from the profile) but not delete it. See What members can see and change: assets, packs, trips and logging.
  • Only the person who created a trip, or someone it's shared with as Admin, can delete it, and only they see Delete Trip (from version 1.0.1; before that editors saw it too, and the trip came back). Anyone a trip was shared with can leave it with Leave Trip (see What you see when only a trip was shared with you).
  • A case can only be edited by its owner, whatever your role in the profile; items in the profile can be edited by its editors, admins and owner. See Edit an asset.
  • Roles don't change what's offered on the website versus the iPhone app, and Pro doesn't change roles: a free account can be an admin, and a Pro feature stays Pro whatever your role.
  • Something you can see but not change usually means you're a Viewer or Logger: ask the owner or an admin to change your role (Manage members: change a role, revoke a trip, remove someone).
