Why can't I edit, delete or log something? Roles explained

What you can do in a shared Profile or Trip depends on your role: Viewer is read-only, Logger can log cases at Stops, Editor can add and change things, Admin can also manage members, and the Owner can do everything. Stops that Master Tour keeps in sync can only be changed in Master Tour.

In your own Profiles you can do everything. In a Profile or Trip someone shared with you, your role decides what's offered, and the server enforces the same rule, so a missing button is the app telling you the truth, not a fault.

What each role can do

  • Viewer: sees everything, changes nothing.
  • Logger (Profiles only): also logs cases at Stops, and adds or removes gear on a Stop.
  • Editor: also adds, renames, edits and deletes assets, packs, trips and Stops, and renames the Profile.
  • Admin: also manages members and sharing, and sets the Profile's Industry.
  • Owner: the person who made the Profile or Trip. Everything, including deleting it.

A Trip shared on its own has Admin, Editor and Viewer roles only; there's no Logger role on a trip, so someone who only needs to log is made an Editor.

iPhone app

On the iPhone app

  1. Find your role: open the Profile's or Trip's Sharing (press and hold the Profile in the profile menu; or the ··· menu on a trip) and look at the member list, or ask the owner.
  2. If you need more, ask the owner or an admin to change your role in the same Sharing sheet.
  3. For a Stop you can't change at all, look for a Master Tour mark: stops that Master Tour keeps in sync can only be edited in Master Tour, and the next sync brings the change over.

The same roles apply. Sharing is in the Profile's ··· menu in the profile menu, or in the trip's menu. Members and their roles are listed there; owners and admins can change them.

Good to know

  • Sharing can be managed by a Profile's owner and admins. For a single shared Trip, only its owner and that Trip's own admins can manage who's on it.
  • An Item marked Private by its owner can only be seen and edited by them.
  • A Case can only be edited by its owner, even by an Editor of the Profile it's in; neither app offers Edit Asset on someone else's case. Items can be edited by the Profile's Editors.
  • A pack is a snapshot of its cases and items; to change an asset itself you need to be able to edit it where it lives.
  • The AI connector works with the same roles: it can change only what your account can change.
