Items and cases: what a case is, and how an item goes inside one

Every asset is an Item or a Case. A case is anything that holds other things (a flight case, rack, bag or suitcase). Items go inside cases in a pack, not on the Assets page.

Every asset is one of two things, chosen on the Item | Case switch when you add it. A case is anything that holds other things: a flight case, a rack, a bag, a suitcase. An item is a piece of kit that can be packed into a case: a microphone, a laptop, a cable loom, a jacket.

The Assets page keeps every asset on one level, so you can't drop an item into a case there. Items go inside cases in a pack, because the same item can travel in a different case on each tour. The pack remembers what's in each case, and the Logger uses it on a trip.

How to tell them apart:

  • A case has a green CASE badge on its tile and card, and a suitcase icon when it has no photo. An item shows a box icon.
  • A case has Case Details (Case Number, and Luggage Type: Cabin or Hold). An item has Identification (Serial Number and Owner), tags and a Private switch; a case can't be private.
  • A case starts in the Cases and Luggage category unless you pick another.

To put an item inside a case:

  1. Open the Packs page and open a pack (or create one).
  2. Add the case to the pack.
  3. Tap the green + on the case to open Add Items to <case>, tick the items and tap the green + at the top right.
  4. To move an item later, press and hold it in the pack: Move to Case or Move to Loose Items. Loose items are in the pack but not in any case; Move All to Case moves them together.

The badges and fields are the same, and the pack page works the same way: open the pack, add the case, then add items to it or move them between cases. See Cases and items inside a pack and Move items between cases in a pack.

Good to know

  • On a trip, the Logger logs the case as one unit; what's inside it is packed and ticked in the pack's Packing Checklist (see What's inside a case on a stop).
  • An item can be in several packs at once, in a different case in each.
  • A pack's weight adds up its cases and the items in them.
  • On the iPhone app you can change an asset between Item and Case in Edit Asset. On the website the switch is fixed once the asset exists.
  • Tags are for items: the website's case form has no Tags row, and tags added to a case on the iPhone app stay on that phone and aren't shared.
  • In a shared profile, an item can be edited by the profile's editors, but a case only by its owner (see Edit an asset).
