Notifications: what Luggage Logger can send, and how to turn each one off

The iPhone app sends four kinds of notification, all made on your phone: a Stop's "all logged", a hand luggage reminder when your flight lands, a luggage reminder before a train, coach, ferry or drive arrives, and stop reminders you set yourself. The website can send service notices to a browser you allow.

Every notification from the iPhone app is scheduled on the phone itself from your own trips; nothing is sent through a server to reach you. The website is different: it can only send notices to a browser you've allowed.

The four kinds:

  1. "<Stop>: all logged", "Every asset on this stop has been logged." Sent when the last case on a Stop is logged by anyone on the trip. Controlled by the Logging Activity switch in Settings.
  2. "Don't forget your hand luggage", "<flight> has landed - grab <your items>." For hand luggage you flagged on a flight, at the flight's landing time (the live time when the app can get it, else the Stop's arrival time). Tapping it opens the Logger at that Stop.
  3. "Don't forget your luggage", "Your <train> arrives at <place> in 10 minutes - grab your bags." For a train, bus, coach, ferry or drive Stop that has an arrival time and at least one asset assigned. It comes 10 minutes before arrival, or 5 minutes on a journey under 20 minutes. Tapping it opens the Logger.
  4. Stop reminders you set: titled with the Stop's name, with your note or "Starts in 15 minutes - <place>." Tapping it opens the Schedule at that Stop. See Set a reminder for a stop.

The app asks for permission to notify you when it first opens, and again when you set your first reminder if it never had an answer.

To turn them off:

  • All of them: open the iPhone's Settings app, then Notifications, then Luggage Logger, and turn Allow Notifications off.
  • "All logged" only: profile button, then Settings, then turn off Logging Activity under Notifications.
  • One Profile's trips only: profile button, Settings, Manage Notifications, and turn that Profile's switch off. This silences all four kinds for its trips.
  • One stop reminder: delete the reminder on the Stop.

Website

On the website

Open the profile button, then Settings, under Notifications:

  • Notifications on this device: allows service messages, such as an outage or a problem with your data, to reach this browser even when Luggage Logger is closed. You can turn it on in more than one browser. On an iPhone or iPad, add the website to your Home Screen first (Share, then Add to Home Screen) and turn it on from there.
  • News and offers: off unless you turn it on; now and then, new features and offers, in the app and as notifications. Service messages come either way.
  • Share usage statistics: counts the days you open Luggage Logger and where; nothing you've entered, no location.

Announcements also appear as a bar at the top of the web app; the X dismisses one for your account everywhere.

Good to know

  • A reminder uses the time on the Stop. If a service is delayed and the Stop isn't updated, the reminder fires at the planned time.
  • A log that completes a Stop shows "<Stop>: all logged" as a message inside the website too, on whichever page you're on.
  • "You've been added to …" and "… joined …" are messages inside the app when a share changes, not notifications.
  • The website doesn't send the luggage or stop reminders. A stop reminder set on the website fires on your iPhone.
