Working offline, and how your changes reach other people

The iPhone app works fully with no signal: everything you add, edit or log is saved on the phone and sent as soon as you're back online, usually within seconds. The website needs a connection to save. Pull down on a list to refresh; Settings, Cloud Sync shows what's still to send.

The iPhone app keeps its own copy of your account, so it never needs a signal to work. Other people see your changes once they've been sent and their own app or browser has picked them up.

iPhone app

On the iPhone app

Offline: add and edit assets, packs, trips and Stops, and log cases, just as online. A small capsule at the bottom of the screen says No Connection (or Offline Mode if you switched it on yourself). Photos added with no signal, on assets, packs and bag tags, are kept on the phone and upload when you're back.

When changes reach others: within a couple of seconds of a change while online. On reconnecting, when the app goes to the background, and every 30 seconds while something is waiting, it sends what's queued. People on the same trip see logs and shares live.

To refresh what you see: pull down on the Home, Assets, Packs, Trips, Dates, Schedule, Logger or Calendar screens. The app also pulls fresh data when it opens and when it comes back to the foreground.

Cloud Sync (profile button, then Settings):

  • Online or Offline, with a switch to force Offline Mode (useful on Wi-Fi that's connected but going nowhere; it stays on until you turn it off).
  • Last Sync, and a caption: Up to date, n changes syncing or Syncing…, with a bar while something is on its way.
  • Sync Now sends what's waiting; Download All fetches everything again ("Downloaded for offline use").
  • Clear Local Cache deletes the phone's copy; it's downloaded again on the next sync. Use it when something looks stuck.
  • Press and hold the Last Sync row for Copy Details (a sync report to paste into an email to support) and, if changes are waiting, Clear, which discards unsent edits. Only use Clear if support asks.

Website

On the website

  • The website reads straight from your account and saves straight to it, so nothing waits in a queue: saving needs a connection.
  • The installed app (Install Luggage Logger in Settings) keeps the pages you've opened and the last data it fetched, so what you've already looked at still shows when the signal drops.
  • Reload the page to refresh. Logs, shares and library changes arrive live while the page is open.

Good to know

  • Signing out sends unsent changes first ("Syncing changes…") and then clears the phone's copy, so don't sign out to fix a sync problem while offline.
  • One change that the server keeps refusing can hold up a trip's refresh; Copy Details in Cloud Sync shows which, and support can clear it.
  • The Apple Watch logs through the iPhone, so it needs the phone nearby, not a signal.
